Navigating proper etiquette in the work place can be tricky at best, a minefield at worst. Simple things like how many times to offer to do the tea round, how short is too short for your skirt/dress, how low is too low for cleavage bearing? Everyday things right, but landing right or left of the boundaries can get you a promotion or sworn enemies for the length of your working life in said office and possibly beyond.
So, to the matter at hand. What's the correct etiquette for food in the workplace? Serious question, do you rice or beans?
Luckily in my current place of work we have a microwave and bringing in food to eat at your desk isn't frowned upon. Even smelly food (within reason). I know, I'm lucky right? I have brought in and comfortably eaten fried fish without any complaints. At my most daring I took in yam porridge once and rice and beans another and those too were fine. I do remember a previous place of work many moons back when I took in jolloff rice, to which one colleague came in sniffing the air and asked, " what smells like dirty socks?". I gave the fake (but done to appear genuine) polite office smile, and heard myself go "ha ha ha", when what I really wanted to say was "WHAT DO YOU MEAN DIRTY SOCKS!!!?"
So please share with me, what you think the correct food etiquette is, and how far you have pushed the boundaries. Anyone done swallow (garri, amala, ground rice, semo or pounced yam) with soup before? Itching to hear someone answer yes. If you run your own company/business, what are your views on what is allowable?
